‼️ DO NOT PRESS THE RECTANGULAR DISPLAY ON THE TOP OF THE DEVICE. YOU CAN DAMAGE THE DEVICE.

When your BLACK is in the ACTIVE state, the display will alternate between 3 screens every 5 seconds or so.

Screen 1 will display CS-BLACK ACTVE. At the bottom of this screen, it will display the web address for accessing the CSB with your browser. This is usually cs-black.local/admin.

❗️ Remember, when typing that into your browser, you must add at the beginning, for example: http://cs-black.local/admin

It will also display the date and time of your last blocklist update. This time will always be displayed using UTC (universal) time.

Screen 2 will display:IP ADDRESS: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
This will be the CSB local network IP address. Write this down as you will need this for the last step.

At the bottom of the screen, it will display 2 more informational lines.

GW: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (The IP address of your gateway or router)
MAC: xx xx xx xx xx xx (The BLACK's MAC address identifier)

❗️ The display will turn off 15 minutes after it boots up. This is because once the BLACK is set up, you will rarely need that information again. This will prevent burn-in so the display lasts a long time. If there is any sort of error condition, the display will turn back on and display instructions.

ℹ️ If you want the screen to display again for any reason, simply pick up your BLACK and tilt it from side to side a couple of times. There is a sensor inside and it will detect the motion and turn the display on for another 15 minutes.

Screen 3 will display various running statistics. These include:

  • Queries - The number of domains queried over the last 24 hours,
  • Blocked - The number of blocked queries over the last 24 hours.
  • Allowed - The number of allowed queries over the last24 hours.
  • Uptime - The uptime in the format days : hours : minutes.
  • CPU Temp - The temperature of the CPU in degrees Celsius

The CPU temperature can be used to gauge how hard the CSB is working. Anywhere between 35ºC and 55°C is within the acceptable range.

‼️ If you are setting up your CSB for the first time, please take a moment and write down your IP address, GW address and MAC address for easy reference later.

Before you proceed to your router configuration, we should cover MAC Addresses. There are 2 optional opportunities to use MAC addresses during setup. Please take a minute and review this section.
