Blocking and Blocklists

Disclaimer: Blocklists are lists of websites and internet services categorized by the type of content they provide. They are not meant to promote or demean any particular category or group, they are merely collections of addresses which meet the criteria for inclusion in a particular category.

We provide numerous categories for our customers so they can control the types of content available on their private networks and devices. The types of content a user might wish to block or allow on their system is up to the user. We do not promote any particular point of view, rather, we provide the tools for users to promote theirs.

Many of the categories we include were requested by users. We encourage users to contact us with requests for new categories.

How We Maintain Our Lists

Over the past 3 decades, we have developed a sophisticated automated and human validated data collection system. Much like search engines, our back end servers are searching for content 24 hours a day. We never list dead sites. All out listings have been validated to ensure they are alive and contain the type of content we're searching for. Multi-layer exclusion lists help ensure we don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Social Media Blocking

Social media blocking presents unique problems to ensure effectiveness with minimal inconvenience. All social media companies use tracking. In fact, social media platforms use tracking much more than other types of sites and services. Files, sites, scripts, images, and logos are all tracked.Because of this, we do not include any social media trackers in our tracking.list blocklist. Instead, we provide complete blocklists categorized by platform. Let's use Facebook as an example for how this works.

If you are a Facebook user, Facebook will track you. There is no way we can block Facebook tracking without blocking Facebook.

If you are not a Facebook user, Facebook will still track you. Every web page that displays a Facebook icon allows Facebook to track you. The same is true for all the other social media links you see everywhere.

The best way to minimize the amount of tracking you are expose to it to select the blocklists for platforms you do not use.

Tracking

Most users have no idea of the extent they are tracked online. There are hundreds of very successful companies whose sole business if tracking internet users. Web site publishers are able to monetize their sites by allowing trackers to install software to track their visitors in real time. They have big data centers where your online profiles are maintained and sell data to other companies so they can target you for advertising. You may visit a website and immediately see an ad for something you just looked at at another site.

Advertising

The advertising blocklist is able to stop over 90% of online ads. This makes websites easier to read, load faster, and use less bandwidth. Unlike ad blocker plugins for web browsers, CSB blocking is rarely detected by websites who deny access to visitors running ad blockers.

We are well aware that many website operators derive the lions-share of their revenue by displaying ads and employing trackers. Many of them use ad placing services and have no control over that ads appear on their websites. While we are not trying to bypass their revenue streams, many of them allow shady, inappropriate, and often disgusting ads to be placed on their sites. And, many simply overdo it. They place so many ads on their sites that it is often difficult to read the content you came there to read.

When you visit a blog or website to read something that interests you, you shouldn't have to look at numerous ads showing rotting teeth or toe fungus.

Ads are everywhere. As you might expect, advertising also tracks you. Using the advertising blocklist will completely change your browsing habits, especially if you visit news aggregators or blogs.

When We Don't Block Something

There are occasions when we don't block an ad or an offending page, Sometimes these are accidental, but sometimes they are intentional. There are occasions where blocking something on a page will break the pages code and not display properly. When we become aware of these, we do our best to adjust out filters to mitigate the issue. Internet Enabled Applications and Devices
